Cowan, Charles Edward

The Newton Kansan

   Charles Edward Cowan, 88, of Stockton, Missouri, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Lake Stockton Healthcare Facility.Charles was the only child born to John E. and Mildred George Cowan on October 13, 1925 in Newton, Kansas.  He joined the United States Navy at age 17 and served as a torpedo man's mate 3rd class for three years during World War II.

   Upon his honoraable discharge, he hurried home to marry the love of his life, Blanche Brown in Burns, Kansas.  They were married for 68 years until his passiing.  They resided in Newton before moving to Marion, Kansas where Charlie built the house he and Blanche lived in on Marion County Lake for 42 years.  In 2006 they moved to Stockton, Missouri where they quickly made friends at the Korth Senior Center.

   Charles was a union brick mason for nearly 30 years.  Upon his retirement, he loved to travel in his RV to enjoy bluegrass and the fellowship of other campers. Charlie never met a stranger and cherished his family and friendships.  He was a faithful Baptist and was known for his powerful prayers.

   He was preceded in death by his sparents.  He is survived by his loving wife, Blanche, daughters Marshal Cowan of Stockton, Missouri and Shelley McLain of Edgerton, Kansas; 3 grandchildren, a great grandson; brother-in-law Bill G. Brown of Newton.

   Visitation will be held at Brumback Funeral home, Stockton, Missouri at 2:00 p.m. April 26 with service following at 3:00 p.m.  Interment is at Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, Kansas
