Dennis, Simeon Sylvester



    Simeon Sylvester Dennis was born in Tennessee in 1828, aged 86 years.  At an early age he enlisted in the service of his county, going through the Mexican campaign.  He married Elizabeth Short in 1850 and they had two boys and seven girls.  Only four of their children survive.  They moved to Illinois soon after 1850.  When the Civil War broke  out Mr. Dennis again offered his services but because of a physical disability was made a recruiting officer until the close of the war.  In 1870 he moved to Great Bend.  His wife died in 1874.  He remarried in 1876 to Margaret Durand with two sons, Paul and Dick.  Mr. Dennis was the  first representative to the Kansas legislature from Barton Cunty.  He was a member of the Christian Church
