Jack R. Cannon, 86, died on
Tuesday (August 19, 2014) at Kansas Christian Home, Newton, Kansas.
Cannon
was co-owner of the Draper-Cannon Funeral Home from 1970 – 1988. He was
born in Emporia, Kansas on January 30, 1928, the son of Roy and Mary
(Magathan) Cannon. A graduate of Emporia High School in 1945, he
attended Kansas University and Emporia State College. He served in the US Navy during World War II. He spent 22 years as a Department Store Buyer-Merchandiser prior to coming to Newton from Dallas, Texas.
While
in Newton, Jack served on The Bethel College Advisory Board, Midland
National Bank Board of Directors, Newton Library Board, Newton Chamber
of Commerce Board, Newton Community Theater Board, Charter Board Member
of the Harvey County Hospice, United Methodist Youth Board, Past
President of Newton Lion's Club, Past President & Drive Chairman of
Harvey County United Way, Kansas State Funeral Directors Association
Board, Kansas State Chairman of the International Order of the Golden
Rule Funeral Directors, and the Danco Foundation Board in Wichita.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; son Richard L. Cannon; and sister Kathleen Stiffler Listrom. Mr
Cannon is survived by a daughter, Kathy (Cannon) Ross of Newton,
son-in-law, Jon Ross, daughter-in-law, Erlene Cannon, and four
grandchildren: Christopher Ross, Brianna Ross, Jared Cannon, and
Nicholas Cannon, one brother-in-law, Myron Listrom, and two nephews Eric
& Dan Stiffler and one niece, Janet Wilcox.
Funeral Services
will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday (August 25, 2014) at Broadway
Colonial Chapel. Burial following funeral services at the Greenwood
Cemetery, Newton, Kansas. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 1pm til 5pm, where the family will receive friends between 2 and 4. In
lieu of flowers, a Memorial has been established at the Cathedral of
Hope UCC Church of Dallas, Tx. and the Kansas Christian Home of Newton,
contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E.
Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
