Alex A. Glass passed away at his home in Newton, Kansas on Wednesday, November 5, 2014.
He was born on Aug. 28, 1954, to Alfred D. and Myrtle (Scrivner) Glass in Newton. He graduated from Newton High and attended computer programming and diagnostic schooling in Kansas City, Missouri.
He worked for Hesston Hay and Forage before moving to and living in Wichita until 1987, when he moved to Lakeland, Florida, where he married Susan (Hirsch) Smith that same year. Retiring after 25 years in May of 2014, as sergeant from the Florida Department of Corrections (Polk City Correctional Institute), he and his wife Susan moved back to Newton, leaving behind an abundance of friends. He was a member of "Wheels Classic Cruisers Car Club" in Lakeland, and he used his spare time restoring his father's 1957 Ford Custom 300. He was currently working to restore a 1957 Ford Station Wagon.
Alex is survived by his wife, of the home; two daughters, Debra (Glass) Muchmore (Joel) of Oakland, California, Kristine Glass of Lawrence; two sons, Bryan Smith (Stephanie) of San Antonio, Texas, and Erik Hirsch (Jennifer) of Jacksonville, Florida; three grandsons and three granddaughters; one brother, Phillip Glass of Newton; two sisters, Wanda (Glass) Platt of Newton, and Barbara (Glass) Raner of Peabody; along with his father in-law, brothers and sister-in laws, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew; and his mother in-law.
Memorial services will be at Petersen Family Funeral Home in Newton at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2014. A memorial has been established for Caring Hands Humane Society.
