Obituary: Alma V. (Steele) Smith

HENDERSON, Neb. — Alma V. (Steele)
Smith, 97, of Henderson, Neb., died on Saturday (Jan. 21, 2012) at
the Henderson Care Center.
She was born on July 26, 1915, to John
and Bertha (Donaldson) Allen in Weleetka, Okla.
Leaving Weleetka at the age of 15, she
went to live with her Aunt Vera in Canadian, Texas, where, after
graduating from high school, she worked for the Fred Harvey
Restaurants as a “Harvey Girl.” She met and married Marshall
Steele in Canadian on Dec. 14, 1936.
Throughout her married life, she owned
and operated restaurants in Oxford and Sedgwick. In 1980, she retired
as manager of the Halstead Hospital record room.
On Nov. 23, 1975, she married William
H. Smith in Halstead.
Survivors include son, Don (Fay) Steele
of San Diego; daughter, Karen (Larry) Kliewer of Hampton, Neb.;
stepson, William Smith Jr.; stepdaughter, Marie Stevens;
grandchildren, Terri (Tim) Roseberry of Richmond, Va., Brenda Walton
of Newton, Tim Kliewer of Denver, Kathryn Asbury of Riverside,
Calif., and Mark (Kimberly) Steele of Dallas; and six
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; a twin brother, Alva, in infancy; brother, Robert; first
husband, Marshall in 1974; and second husband, William in 1998.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday, with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at
Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m.
Thursday at the Halstead Cemetery, with Don Steele conducting the
service.
Memorials may be left with Henderson
Healthcare Center, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
