GOESSEL — Eldon Schmidt, 90, of Hesston passed away Thursday (March 18, 2010) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
He was born on Dec. 21, 1919, in rural Goessel, the son of Abraham and Elizabeth Schmidt.He was a lifetime resident of Goessel, moving to Hesston in 2007. He farmed all his life and worked for Guerdon Industries in Newton. He also did maintenance work at Bethesda Home and at Mennonite Heritage Museum. He was a member of Koerner Heights Church in Newton and the Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus. He also sang in quartet for more than 30 years. In 1941, he married Cora G. Voth in Goessel. She survives.Other survivors include his five children, Bryce of Wichita, Gareth (Charlotte) of rural Goessel, Merrill (Sandy) of rural Goessel, Colleen (Todd) Gillespie of Asheville, N.C., and Bradford (Terrie) of Oceanside, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and four sisters, Emma Reimer of Loveland, Colo., Nola Koehn of Newton, Viola Ratzlaff of Goessel and LuEtta Frey of Goessel.He was preceded in death by three brothers, Phil, Marvin and Harlow, and one sister, Verna Reimer.The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Ott Funeral Home in Hesston.Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Koerner Heights Church in Newton with Dr. Tim Mace officiating. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Eastlawn Cemetery in rural Hesston.Memorials may be sent to Schowalter Villa or Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, 107 S. Lancaster, P.O. Box 32, Hesston, KS 67062.
