Martha attended Victory Elementary School, McPherson High School and Bethel College, graduating in 1943. She began her teaching career in Henderson, Neb, as a teacher-librarian and then worked in Lane County Community High School in Dighton. Her summers were spent at Library Science School in Denver. Marthas life was filled with library science and all things related. Her career dream came true when she was invited to come to Bethel College as head librarian. Her life revolved around Bethel College, Bethel College Mennonite Church and the library where she served until her retirement. The in-between spaces were filled with memberships in numerous business and professional organizations in the community, plus keeping up with all of her nieces and nephews in her extended family, giving them books to instill in them the love of reading. Memorial donations may be made to Bethel College or to Bethel College Mennonite Church in care of Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
