CARROLLTON, Ga. - Harriet Lucille Lyon,
97, a homemaker, musician and teacher, died on Aug. 3 at the Haralson
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bremen, Ga., where she resided
in her later years.
She was born on July 27, 1913, in
Rossville, the daughter of Edgar and Nettie (Howard) Griswold, both
deceased.
She was married to Wayne Ivan Lyon of
Admire on May 28, 1938. They had been married for 52 years when he
died on Sept. 21, 1990.
She was a former music and elementary
school teacher. Her last position was at Halstead Elementary School
in Halstead.
She was a past president of the United
Methodist Women at First United Methodist Church in Newton, P.E.O.,
Treble Clef Club and Mothers Club, was a member of the Wichita
Handweavers, Spinners and Dyers Guild, Daughters of the American
Revolution, and the Newton Retired Teachers Association, and was an
active member of her church for 64 years. She played violin in the
Newton String Quartet for more than 20 years, and also was a pianist.
In later years, loom weaving was her
hobby.
Mrs. Lyon moved to Carrollton in 2001
to be near her son, Bruce, and his family.
Survivors include three sons and their
wives, Bruce and Katherine Lyon of Carrollton, Duane and Shirley Lyon
of Redding, Calif., Richard Lyon and Emma Groethe of Boston Heights,
Ohio; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by three
brothers, Leslie, Edgar and Sherwin Griswold; and a sister, Leona
Ryder.
Family visitation will be at 9 a.m.
Aug. 21 at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton.
A memorial service will follow
visitation at 10:30 a.m. at Petersen Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Rossville Township
Cemetery in Rossville, with a brief graveside service at 3:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to
the music programs at First United Methodist Church in Newton and
First United Methodist Church in Carrollton.
