John P. Quilty
1922 - 2015
John Patrick Quilty, 92, died June 29,
2015 at First Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kansas.
He was born July 23, 1922 in Newton to
Mary Widowsky and Jack Quilty. While attending Newton High School he
worked at the family store Quilty's Grocery, off 8th Street, until he
graduated in 1940. In 1942 he began his career with the Santa Fe
railroad where he would meet his wife Marguerite McClintock. On
February 14, 1946 they wed at St. Mary's Catholic Church where he was
a member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1947 he was promoted with the
Santa Fe railroad to locomotive engineer where he remained in that
position until his retirement in 1982. For over a decade he cared for
his ailing wife Marguerite in their home until her passing on July 7,
2002.
In March of this year, John was
recognized by the Knights of Columbus for his 70 years of membership.
He is survived by daughter, Maryanna
Quilty of Topeka, Kansas; son John Quilty and his wife Debbie of
Granbury, Texas; granddaughter Megan York and husband Jared of
Granbury, Texas as well as great-grandson Declan Quilty York.
He is preceded in death by his wife
Marguerite; brothers Thomas and Robert; sisters Gertrude Fey and
Sister Mary Catherine.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be
Thursday (July 2, 2015) at 7 pm. The Mass of Christian burial will be
Friday (July 3, 2015) at 10:00 am both at St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Newton. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in
Newton.
There will be no viewing as cremation
has been effected.
The family wishes to thank the staff at
First Presbyterian Manor and friends for their loving care and
support.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial have
been established with Good Shepard Hospice or St. Mary's Education
