Obituary

Annie Lois Pomeroy was born October 7, 1935 to James and Gladys (Davdison) Murray. She was the third of seven children, six girls and one boy. She was of Scotch-Irish decent, born at White Plains, Alabama, located in Northeast Alabama at the tail end of the Appalachian Mountains.

Her dad was a sharecropper, she use to say "she grew up barefoot hoeing cotton". She was raised and Baptized Southern Baptist. Lois loved school and reading. Upon graduating high school, she had read every book in their small school. She loved the mountains, especially in the spring when the Dogwoods bloomed.

As a young woman she moved to Anniston, Alabama; were she met Jack Pomeroy stationed at Ft. McClellan. Four months later, they were married on April 11, 1957. They returned to Kansas upon Jack's release from the Army in March of 1958 and moved to the family farm near Norwich. When first coming to Kansas, Lois was afraid every time the wind blew, because it only blew in the mountains when a storm was coming!

She adjusted to the Kansas wheat farm life and helped Jack on the farm. She began attending Chicaskia Baptist Church where she was a member for many years. Lois later attended the Norwich United Methodist Church for several years. She had two children Jerry and Brenda, which she was very involved with their school, sports and 4-H activities. The family traveled back to Alabama most every year to see family.

Lois worked for a short time at Farrar Corp. She then started her 25 year career at Harper Hospital caring for the people of Harper County, first as an aide, then in 1972 as an LPN. Her favorite position was swing bed coordinator where she loved to take care of "her ladies". Later, she began work as a clinic nurse at Wichita clinic until her retirement.

Lois loved dancing, hand work, reading, her flower gardens, and following her kids and grandchildren. She had many friends in the Norwich area that she loved dearly. Jack and Lois loved hosting many large Halloween and pasture parties for neighbors and friends, who loved to come to the Pomeroy parties. They loved to travel and were also able to take many wonderful trips to most every state and Canada over the past 15 years.

November of 2007, Jack and Lois moved off the family farm to Newton to be closer to Jerry and Dixie and grandchildren. With her love of people she soon had many new friends. Being involved with Red Hats, Trinity Methodist Church, American Legion, and as a volunteer at the Newton Medical Center, Kaufman Museum, and the church. Lois loved caring for people as a nurse and all the people she met that needed help. She always had a great smile, laugh and brought joy to the people she was around.

In 1978 Lois survived Ovarian Cancer. This started her health challenges, which ended on August 11, 2015 when she slipped peacefully into sleep and her life after. Lois is preceded in death by her parents, James & Gladys Murray; brother Raymond Murray; and her sisters, Joyce Bain and Mary Ruth Morgan.
