Obituary

Melvin R. O'Keefe, 90, of Newton, died Saturday (December 5, 2015) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

He was born on December 6, 1924 in Newton, the son of John Patrick and Clara Vetter O'Keefe. Melvin was raised in rural Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1942. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Melvin married Erna Marguerite Schlagowsky on April 16, 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton. They farmed for many years until retiring and moving into Newton.

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's and also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife Erna of the home; daughter Diane McCully and her husband David of Wichita; and grandsons Logan and Ryan McCully.

Melvin is preceded in death by his parents; brother Leo J. O'Keefe; and sister Helen Lorraine Ambler.

The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M., Friday (December 11, 2015) at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday (December 12, 2015) at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9:00 A.M. on Friday.

A memorial has been established with St. Mary's Catholic Church, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
