Walter H. Janzen

Walter H. Janzen, 88, died Sunday (Aug. 17, 2008) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

He was born on June 6, 1920, in rural Goessel, the son of Sarah (Hiebert) and Cornelius K. Janzen.

Walter helped his father on the farm in rural Goessel until his family moved to Newton in 1943.

He served in the Civil Public Service during World War II in Iowa and Illinois. Upon his return, he worked for different farmers in the Newton area, east of town.

Walter had been employed at various local industries in Newton, including the cleaning and maintenance for Ross-Cargill and NewProcess, then moved on to Guerdon Industries and worked until 1959 when they closed.

Walter loved to travel in his car around the United States. He attended several world fairs and visited many points of interest around the country and back.

While growing up, he was a member of Tabor Mennonite Church. He then transferred his membership to First Mennonite Church in Newton, following his time served in the Civil Public Service.

Although Walter had been hearing impaired for many years, his accomplishments were phenomenal.

Survivors include three brothers, Edwin H. (Mary Jane) Janzen of North Newton, Elmer H. Janzen of Wichita, and Adolph H. (Alice) Janzen of Enid, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur H., Abe H., and Cornelius 'Curt' H. Janzen; and one sister, Lydia Flaming.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Clarence Rempel will preside.

Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Manor in care of the funeral home.
