Leona M. Walker
Leona M. Walker, 93, former owner of
Westwind Restaurant, died Friday (April 20, 2001) at Kidron Bethel
Health Care in North Newton.
She was born May 22, 1907, to Alexander
and Mary (Binnion) Wooten in Ada, Okla. They preceded her in death.
She married Ralph Walker Nov. 7, 1925, in Kanawa, Okla. He preceded
her in death Jan.13, 1975.
She was a member of the American Legion
Auxiliary and the Christian Women's Fellowship. She moved to Newton
from McPherson in 1950. She served in the Army and the Navy during
World War II in Civil Service positions in Ogden, Utah, and worked as
a volunteer for the American Red Cross until 1992.
She also was preceded in death by four
sisters, Johnie Wooten, Mayme Wooten, Stella Wooten and Ava Wooten.
Other survivors include: two sons,
Robert Walker of Newton and Don Walker of Burns; a sister, Cledith
Wooten of Willard, Utah; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren
and one step-great-grandchild.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday
at Petersen Funeral Home with the Rev. MyCherie Zimmerman of First
Christian Church of Newton officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to
5 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Internment
will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Memorials have been
established with the First Christian Church Building Fund in care of
Petersen Funeral Home.
