Hazel May Myers Ewert Schmidt, 85, died Friday (June 2, 2006).
She was born June 11, 1920, in Niles, the daughter of Gerhard and Helena Ewert. A resident of North Newton, she was raised in Hillsboro before moving to Walton, Kingman and Hesston. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1938. She was a nurse, homemaker and professional seamstress.
She belonged to Faith Mennonite Church in North Newton. Hazel loved to sing and was a former member of many choirs, including the mixed quartet and women's quartet at Hillsboro High School and the Hillsboro First Mennonite Church choir.
She married Harold D. Schmidt on May 5, 1941, in Hillsboro. Harold also loved to sing, and the couple sang many duets together. He survives.
Other survivors include: a daughter, Christy Painter and her husband Vince of Derby; a sister, Ethel Abrahams and her husband Norman of North Newton; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: four brothers, Jacob, Henry, Gerhard and David Ewert; and five sisters, Anna Bartel, Sara Plenert, Elizabeth Wollmann, Marie Regier and Martha Hodel.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Faith Mennonite Church, 2100 N. Anderson, Newton, KS 67114.
