Elizabeth H. Mettling
HUTCHINSON -- Elizabeth H. Mettling,
85, died Wednesday (Nov. 12, 2003) at Hutchinson Hospital. She was
born Aug. 3, 1918, to Edgar and Emelia (Berger) Hirschler in
Halstead. She married Raymond Mettling May 29, 1971, in Great Bend.
He preceded her in death May 3, 1984. She was a 1936 graduate of
Halstead High School, a 1940 graduate of Bethel College with a degree
in home economics and a 1951 graduate of Kansas State University with
a master's in home economics education. She taught public schools in
Ensign, Centerview, Lost Springs, Halstead, Dodge City and at Dodge
City Community College. After 16 years of teaching, she served 17
years with the state Department of Education as a home economics
supervisor in vocational education. She was a member of Trinity
United Methodist Church. She was a member of the American and Kansas
Home Economics Association and School Food Service Association,
United Methodist Women, Stephan Ministries, Church Women United,
Breakfast Lions Club, Hutchinson Retired Teachers Association, Delta
Kappa Gamma, volunteered with Mother-to-Mother Ministry and Youth
friends.
She served as president of the Kansas
Vocational Home Economics Association, the National Association of
State Supervisors of Home Economics and the Kansas School Food
Service Association. She received the Distinguished Service Award
from the Kansas Association of Vocational Home Economics,
certification from the National School Lunch Program USDA,
Distinguished Service Award from the Kansas School Food Service
Association and a 50-year Membership Award from the Kansas
Association of Family & Consumer Service Association.
Survivors include: two nephews, John
Hirschler of Louisiana and Jim Hirschler of Florence; and a niece,
Judy Beckmenn of Florence.
She also was preceded in death by two
brothers, Willard Hirschler and John Hirschler.
Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today
at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson.
Funeral service will be 10 a. m.
Saturday at Elliott Chapel with the Revs. Nick Warner and Mary Al
Titus officiating.
Graveside service will be 2:30 p. m.
Saturday at Wayne Cemetery in Lewis.
Memorials have been established with
Trinity United Methodist Church, the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley
Towers and to the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home,
1219 N. Main Street, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
