Grace (Grietje) van der Weg
Grace (Grietje) van der Weg, 89, died
Monday (Jan. 29, 2006) at Newton Medical Center in Newton.
She was born on Nov. 20, 1917, in Grou,
Netherlands, to Aaltje (Posthumes) and Jelke Roel Pijl. She married
Henry R. van der Weg on April 1, 1937, in Koudum, Netherlands. Henry
preceded her in death in December 2005. Grace was a member of First
Mennonite Church in Newton. She served on the church's funeral
committee and also volunteered with Mennonite Central Committee for
many years.
Prior to immigrating to the United
States in 1956, Grace worked with her husband in a dairy store in
Amsterdam. In the United States, she worked alongside her husband in
the Newton ALCO Discount Store. She also did housekeeping for various
families in Newton. In earlier years, Grace and her husband made
numerous trips to the Netherlands to visit family and friends. She
enjoyed knitting and baking for her loving family and friends. Grace
will be remembered as a loving mother and friend who greatly enjoyed
caring for her family.
Survivors include: daughters, Alice and
Peter Neufeld of Newton and Anneke Herrold and Ids de Vries of Hoorn,
Netherlands; son Marten and Peggy van der Weg of Newton; brother,
Henry Pyl of Hesston; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren;
and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; three sisters; and two brothers.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at
First Mennonite Church in Newton with Pastor Clarence Rempel of the
church officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Gardens of Memory in
Newton. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Petersen
Funeral Home in Newton.
A memorial fund has been established
with the church and Schowalter Villa in care of the funeral home.
