William C. Palmer

WASHINGTON, Iowa -- William C. Palmer, 79, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at Halcyon House Healthcare Center in Washington.

He was born July 2, 1921, in Topeka to Melvin G. and Mary Jane (Stephens) Palmer. They preceded him in death. He married Bonnie Jean Haun June 28, 1942, in San Antonio. She survives of the home.

He was a freight clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad for 25 years and then became a loan officer for the Kansas State Bank until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton, Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He played clarinet for the Newton city band for several years and enjoyed fishing and traveling. He attended Bethel College after graduating from Newton High School in 1940. He was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, serving in India and China. After marriage, he resided in San Antonio, El Paso, Albuquerque and back to Newton until 2000, when he moved to Washington, Iowa.

Other survivors include: two sons, Charles Palmer of Saginaw, Texas, and William Phillip Palmer of North Newton; two daughters, Phyllis Graber of Washington, Iowa, and Carolyn Palmer of Newton; a sister, Maxine Quilty of Newton; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home.

Recitation of the rosary will be 7 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newton.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ken Schuckman officiating.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial has been established with St. Mary's Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
