Obituary

Alfredo L. Terrones of Newton passed away on Monday (Aug. 20, 2012) at age 92, surrounded by his loved ones. Alfredo was born on Aug. 26, 1919, in Newton to Clara and Tomas Terrones and lived his entire life in Newton. In 1942, Alfredo was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve his country overseas during World War II. He was wounded during battle and received the Purple Heart from his grateful nation. Alfredo also received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and European American Middle Eastern Campaign medal. Alfredo was a member of the Knights of Columbus- 4th Degree, and a member of the American Legion Wayne Austin Post and VFW. Alfredo retired from the Santa Fe Railroad, where he was employed for 42 years. He was a charter member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and was involved with the parish in many capacities. Alfredo is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Belen E. Terrones and his four children, Sara M. Terrones of Roeland Park, Albert (Ruth) Terrones of Merriam and Emma (Dwight) Gribble; and granddaughter, Claire Louise Gribble of Madison, Wis., and Alicia (Scott) Tighe of Lakewood, Colo. Survivors also include two sisters, Ventura (Benny) Campa and Lorrie Lujano; one brother, Hilarion (Leo) Terrones, all of Newton; and also numerous nieces and nephews. Alfredo was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Andrew, Faustino and Eugene Terrones; and sisters, Esparanza (Hope) and Antonia Terrones. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2012) at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 23, 2012) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. The Rev. Juan Garza will be the celebrant. Graveside military service and interment will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to: The Newton Senior Center, Knights of Columbus of Newton or Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
