Alma Neufeld McGuire
1928 - 2014
Obituary
Alma Neufeld McGuire, 86, died
Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.
She was born Jan. 12, 1928, in Roslau,
Germany, to George and Lena Michael. She was the youngest of three
sisters, with Anna and Clara preceding her in death.
Alma married Peter Neufeld Dec. 21,
1946, in Roslau, Germany. In December 1951, they immigrated to
Newton, bringing with them children Peter, Gerhard and Hans. They
were sponsored by First Mennonite Church.
Speaking only German, the family
quickly learned English. Even in her later years, when Alma would
speak, it would be with a German accent. When asked where she was
from, she would always say "Germany" and smile.
Alma's husband Peter died Oct. 13,
1963. She married Don McGuire in 1969; he died Dec. 19, 1997.
Alma worked in the kitchen at Prairie
View for more than 40 years. She was referred to as the little
singing German. Alma especially loved the children there, offering
"seconds" and always had gift bags of candy for them at
holiday time.
Alma is survived by her sons, Peter
(Ali), Gerhard (Julie) and Hans; seven grandchildren; and many
great-grandchildren.
Alma will always be remembered for her
generosity and cheerful spirit.
Visitation will be 10 to 10:45 a.m.
Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, at Petersen Funeral Home. A graveside committal
will be at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, followed by a
memorial service at 1 p.m. at Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston.
Chaplains Wendy Miller, Bill Eichelberger and Pastor Kay Schroeder
will be presiding.
Memorials are suggested to Schowalter
Villa or Good Shepherd Hospice, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
