Donald D. Smith
Donald D. Smith, 79, of Newton died
Thursday (Nov. 6, 2008) at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St.
Joseph campus in Wichita. He was born Oct. 6, 1929, to in Delphos to
Clement Earl and Freda Rosetta (Bell) Smith. On Jan. 5, 1959, he
married Dorothy Smith in Garden City. She survives of the home. Don
was a 1947 graduate of Newton High School and earned his bachelor's
degree from Wichita University in 1965. He worked for various
aircraft companies as a design engineer, including Boeing, Cessna,
Lockheed, McDonnell Douglas and Rockwell.
He worked on the space shuttle projects
and Skylab. Don also worked for KAKE TV in Wichita and was a
projectionist for the Fox and Roxy theaters in Newton.
He enjoyed photography and gardening.
He also collected stamps and did woodworking. He was an avid reader
and also spoke fluent German and Russian.
Don greatly looked forward to spending
time with his loving family and many friends.
Other survivors include daughter, Wanda
Twomey of Park City; son, Alan Smith of Newton; daughter, Brenda
Damon of Boise, Idaho; sister, Phyllis McDowell of Allentown, Pa.;
brother, Larry Smith of Marion; eight grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; sister, Rosetta Lampher; and granddaughter, Stephanie Marie
Smith.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m.
Monday at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton with family receiving
friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at
First Church of God in Newton, with Pastor Brian Curran of the church
officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in
Newton.
