Obituary
BURNS - Carl Eugene Riggs, 79, of Burns, after a valiant
battle with cancer, died peacefully among family on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, in
Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Carl was born Dec. 23, 1934, in Newton, the son of Thomas
Glenn and Julia Marie (née Bolen) Riggs. Carl served in the United States Army
as heavy AA fire control crewman, from 1954-1956, where he received a good
conduct medal. He was Postmaster of Burns for 32 years, until his retirement in
1994. On June 2, 1957, he was united in marriage to Niva Jo Daniels; their
union was blessed with four children. Carl was a loyal servant of the Burns
United Methodist Church and an active volunteer in his community. He will be
remembered for his wry sense of humor and his resilient spirit.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Niva Jo; his
parents; and his brothers, Leroy Riggs of Marion and Howard Riggs of Burns.
Carl is survived by his sister: Bernice Harms (Lawrence) of
Rio Hondo, Texas; his children: Doug Riggs (Donna) of Council Bluffs, Iowa,
Dennis Riggs (Brenda Joyce) of Peabody, Bobby Riggs (Debbie) of Parsons,
Tennessee, and Brenda Nelson (Brett) of Cassoday; his eight grandchildren:
Rachael Riggs Leyva (Chris) of Columbus, Ohio, Rob Riggs of Council Bluffs,
Iowa, Jesse Riggs (Bristen) of Belton, Missouri, Breana Nelson of Manhattan,
Ethan Riggs of Peabody, Glenn Riggs of El Dorado, Jordan Riggs of Peabody, and
Brenton Nelson of Cassoday; a great-grandchild, Jack Leyva of Columbus, Ohio;
and a sister-in-law, Norma Riggs of Marion.
The viewing will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Zeiner
Funeral Home, Marion. The funeral service will be held at the Burns United
Methodist Church, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014. Interment will follow in
the Burns Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the Burns United
Methodist Church, in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm, Marion, KS 66861.
