The Newton Kansan

Ruth M. Campbell

Obituary

HESSTON - Ruth M. Campbell was born in rural Bartlett, in southeast Kansas, on Aug. 22, 1917. She passed quietly at the age of 96 at Newton Presbyterian Manor.

Her parents were Bertha M. and Nate E. Vandermark. Her husband, Bennie Waldo Campbell, and her parents preceded her in death.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Connie L. Kramer and Robbie Dreier of rural Hesston; her grandson, Tim Kramer of Blue Springs, Mo.; granddaughter, Chris Kramer of Kansas City, Mo.; and great-granddaughters, Delaney and Hailee Kramer of Blue Springs, Mo.

Ruth graduated from Altamont High School in 1935. After graduation, she lived on the family farm and in southern California before moving to Detroit, Mich., in 1939. She went to work for the Army as a civilian as an assistant to a lieutenant colonel preparing papers for soldiers being sent overseas.

In June of 1940, Ruth rode the train from Oswego to Reno, Nev., to marry Bennie. They met while Bennie worked on her father's farm. It was a long courtship, but Bennie prevailed. They lived in Lake Tahoe, Calif., where Bennie worked in a gold mine and they lived in a log cabin campground owned by the mining company. They returned to Kansas in the mid 40's.

In 1952, Ruth and Bennie moved to Kansas City and lived there for more than 30 years.

Ruth was a cherished friend by many and a faithful member of the Ruskin Heights Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star. Ruth was an accomplished seamstress and made most of her own clothing. She loved singing and playing the piano and organ and would pass many evenings away playing songs from the 30's. She loved beautiful flowers and a nice yard. You could always find her out working in the yard with her wide brimmed hat and gardening gloves.

She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed. Memories of shared fun times, encouragement, pep talks, bolstering and support, secrets and most of all unconditional love will never be forgotten.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 17, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Highland Trinity UCC Church, 8322 N. Anderson Rd., Newton, KS 67114.

Online tributes can be sent to the family via remark1247@gmail.com.

Memorials donations are suggested to Newton Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund, 1200 E. Seventh St., Newton, KS 67114, or may be sent in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, 107 S. Lancaster, P.O. Box 32, Hesston, KS 67062.
