Hulda Stucky (1922 - 2014)

Obituary

Hulda G. Stucky, 91, of Wichita passed away peacefully on April 25, 2014.

She was born in Shafter, Calif., on August 13, 1922 to parents Henry and Katie Boese Gaede. Hulda was a graduate of Bakersfield Junior College (1942) and Bethel College, North Newton,(1945) and completed teacher certification at Wichita State University (1967).

She worked for the Mennonite Central Committee (1946-1947), participated in Mennonite Students Abroad at International Work Camp in Hamburg, Germany (1948), and was a Unit Leader in MCC Voluntary Service in Vineland, N.J (1949). She taught at Wichita Southeast High School from 1967 – 1987. She was an avid bridge player, active book club member, talented watercolor painter, former choir member, and devotee of political discussion on MSNBC.

She was married on December 23, 1950 to the late Dean R. Stucky (1922 – 2000) whom she loved and admired profoundly. Her support for his contributions to the Wichita Public Schools continued well beyond his death, and Hulda contributed a great deal to public education in her own right. Their sons are Jerome Stucky (b. 1952) of Whitewater and Philip Stucky (b. 1955) of Chicago, Ill. Other survivors include brother, Harold Gaede of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister-in-law, Vena Stucky of Wichita; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members whom she appreciated greatly. Members of her House Church and church provided years of support and community.

A Memorial Service for Hulda will be ar 11 a.m. Saturday (May 3, 2014) at the Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church, 655 S Lorraine, Wichita. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (May 2, 2014) at Downing & Lahey East, 6555 E. Central, Wichita. In lieu of flowers the family requests your efforts towards peace and betterment in the world. Donations may be made in her name to the Dean R. and Hulda G. Stucky Scholarship Fund, Bethel College, North Newton, KS 67117; the Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church, 655 S Lorraine, Wichita, KS 67211; or the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S Market Street, Wichita, KS 67202.
