Kirkpatrick, Patrick Everett

The Newton Kansan

Patrick Everett Kirkpatrick

Obituary

Patrick Everett Kirkpatrick passed away on Thursday (May 5, 2016) after a brief illness. Pat, as he was known, was born Aug. 11, 1953. He was the first born of Max and Margie Kirkpatrick.

Pat graduated from Newton High School. While there, he enjoyed being involved with football and wrestling.

After high school, he attended Pittsburg State University, where he received his degree in Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning.

Upon graduation, he returned to Newton and to the family business, where he continued to work and then became owner.

Pat married Maxine Funk on Oct. 22, 1977. To this union, two sons were born – Jacob Ross and Paul Anthony.

Pat then married Rita Fundenberger on Sept. 11, 1999. They have lived just north of Newton until present.

Growing up, Pat has always had an appreciation of the great outdoors and all of the adventures it held. Pat enjoyed hunting for anything with four legs or feathers and going fishing for anything that would snap at his hook. He liked having bagged or caught something, but he always had a great story of the one that "got away."

People who knew Pat wouldn't say that he would be known for being a great dancer. While single, he joined a singles group and learned how to Two-Step. He then moved on to the West Coast Swing.

Pat and Rita enjoyed going to competitive dances and dance workshops in Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas. It was one of those things that you would have had to have seen with your own eyes to believe, but he definitely had some moves.

Pat had a love of life and enjoyed the simplest of things. He found God's beauty everywhere.

Pat is survived by his wife, Rita, of the home; sons Jacob Kirkpatrick of Wichita and Paul Kirkpatrick (Patty) of Wichita; a new grandson, Paxton Kirkpatrick of Wichita; stepdaughters Kristine Ross of Olathe and Brandie (Mike) Verlezza of Canton; step-granddaughters Brianna Huser of Canton and Jillian Ross-Mason of Canton; sisters Kathryn Kirkpatrick of Fort Collins, Colorado, Joan Kirkpatrick (Mike Snider) of Wichita, Helen Grotz of Beloit, Virginia Kirkpatrick (Tim Johnson) of Newton and Mary Kirkpatrick (Roger Simoneau) of Beloit; and brother, Jim Kirkpatrick of San Antonio, Texas. Pat also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A service will be on Saturday, May 7, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Newton – 801 N. Main. It will be officiated by Dr. Doug Tofteland. Memorial contributions in Pat's name may be made to Ducks Unlimited or the American Cancer Society .
