Obituary
Albert Gomez, 81, died Saturday (Jan. 18, 2014) at Wesley
Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born on Dec. 21, 1932, in Florence, the son of
Francisco Ortiz and Juana Puentes Gomez. After graduating from Florence High
School, Albert went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad.
Albert was inducted into the U.S. Army in April 1953 during
the Korean Conflict. After becoming disabled, Albert was discharged in June
1954. He lived in the Newton area for many years until moving to the Veterans
Home in Winfield in May 2013.
He was a member of Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church in
Newton, where he was a faithful servant with a strong faith in God. Albert also
was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and the
Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Albert loved the Kansas City Chiefs and never missed any of
their televised games. You could always tell he was a fan by his many favorite
Chiefs' shirts.
Survivors include his sister, Phyllis Chavez, who cared for
him for more than 60 years, and Isabel Gonzalez, both of Newton, and Isadora
London of Huntington, Ark.; one brother, John Gomez of Newton; along with
several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers,
Mitch, Enrique and Trinidad Gomez; and sisters, Mercedes Gomez, Mary Grace
Gomez and Mary Helen Gomez.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday
(Jan. 21, 2014). The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday
(Jan. 22, 2014), both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton.
Interment will be at the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Florence.
