Obituary
LaVern Wesley Hein, 86, died on Jan. 23, 2014, in Wichita.
LaVern was born on Aug. 2, 1927, in Clark Township, to Joe
B. and Lydia (Winter) Hein.
LaVern obtained his plumbers license in Pratt, and later
moved to Newton where he started Hein Plumbing. After retiring from his
business, he farmed for many years. Known as Lil' Plumber to many, LaVern
continued his love of plumbing projects for decades and once proclaimed he had
crawled under his last house, as he neared his 80th birthday.
He served in the U.S. Navy/National Guard and was an active
member of the Newton VFW and American Legion. LaVern also earned the
distinction of serving as Exalted Ruler of the Newton Elks Club and was a very
active member of the organization. Long known for his love of America and those
who have served, LaVern was recently awarded the Certificate of Continuous
Membership for 60 years of membership and service to the American Legion.
When LaVern wasn't working, he could be found on the dance
floor, traveling the countryside, running bingo games at the VFW and Legion, or
spending time with friends and family during a game of dominos or cards.
He is survived by companion, Ann Bergkamp; three children,
Kenneth W. Hein (and wife, Marla), Kathy L. Hein-Garnatz, and Bruce A. Hein;
nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lydia Hein;
and three brothers and three sisters.
