Herman Luke Hershberger

Obituary

Herman Luke Hershberger, 93, went home to be with Jesus on Friday morning, July 8, 2016 at Pine Village (Meadowbrook Neighborhood) in Moundridge.

He was born November 6, 1922, in Cass County, Missouri, near East Lynne and Harrisonville to S.S. and Mabel (Hartzler) Hershberger. He was the youngest son and second youngest of eight children.

Growing up, he helped on the family farm. When he was older, he also worked for other farmers. It was when he was helping a farmer in Iowa that he met Velma Hershberger. They married on Oct. 15, 1950, at West Union Mennonite Church near Parnell, Iowa.

They farmed with her father until moving to Hesston in 1956, when he became the 75th employee at Hesston Manufacturing. After retiring, he and Velma volunteered at Schowalter Villa, driving residents to their doctor's appointments. They were Schowalter Villa Volunteers of the Year in 1999 and 2004.

He is survived by his children Mary Lou Hershberger of Grabill, Indiana, Kermit Dee and Beth Hershberger and Vietta and Deve Krehbiel, all of Hesston; sisters-in-law and husbands Dorothy and Cletus Miller and Doris and Ted Redding; grandchildren Seth and Sarah Hershberger, Chad and Tara Hershberger, Jenna and David Boettger Boring, Joel Boettger, Kelly Krehbiel, Jesse and Jeremiah Forrest, Kasey and Stacey Krehbiel; great-grandchildren Collin, Natalie and Grady Hershberger, Kohen and Archer Hershberger, Verona and Finnegan Boettger Boring, Nathan and Jadie Krehbiel, Collin Burnette and Gemma Forrest, as well as by Logan, Allie, Nolan and Mollie Krehbiel; many loving nieces; nephews; and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents S.S. and Mabel; wife Velma, on June 27, 2010; his brothers and sisters and their spouses: Alma and Jonathan Mast, Irvin, Lois and Maxine Hershberger, Ruth Hershberger, Elba and Dollie Hershberger, Laura Hershberger, Ralph and Dorothy Hershberger, Lela and Harold Stutzman; and two nephews, Timothy J. Redding and Jarrett Hawley.

Herman loved music and telling jokes. He lost his hearing when he was around 40, but even so, he continued to tell his jokes and in the last several years sang parts of songs he remembered from his youth. We are so happy to know he can hear now and is singing with his family and the heavenly choir.

The family would like to thank all the loving people who cared for him at both Pine Village/Meadowbrook and Schowalter Villa. May you all be blessed.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday (July 10, 2016) at Miller-Ott Funeral Home, Hesston.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday (July 11, 2016) at Hesston Mennonite Church. A private burial will be at Eastlawn Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to Pine Village (memo - Meadowbrook), The Schowalter Villa Good Samaritan Fund, Hospice & Homecare of Reno County, or Hesston Mennonite Church in care of Miller- Ott Funeral Home, 107 S. Lancaster St., Hesston, KS 67062.
