Obituary
Arland J. Mapes, 83, Hesston, passed away on Dec. 29, 2013,
at Asbury Park with Good Shepard Hospice in Newton.
Arland was born on Feb. 8, 1930, in Carlton to Norman B. and
Leda Mapes. He attended Gardner High School. Following high school, he enlisted
into the Armed Services. He also attended Fort Hays State for a year between
his military enlistments.
Arland served in the Korean Conflict Era, Vietnam Era and
peace time. He served in both in the Army and the Navy, retiring as a W3
Warrant Officer with more than 20 years of total Federal Service, earning
several service awards, including National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam
Service Medal, Armed Forces Honor Medal, Four Seas Bars and Army Commendations
Medal, along with many others.
On Sept. 8, 1950, he married Beverly Jane Mapes. Jane
blessed him with a son, Shan B. Mapes, on Nov. 15, 1954. Arland was dedicated
to his family and friends and was known for his charming and witty personality
with a touch of orneriness. He enjoyed animals of all kinds, with a great
fondness of his dogs Gypsy, Sassy and Josie, which he often referred to as his
"Three Amigos."
Arland has four grandchildren, Sierra Horn (Vince) of
Hesston, Tionna Botterweck (Derek) of Newton, Shae B. Mapes (Crystal) and
Jeremy J. Mapes (Krista) of Missouri; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman B. and Leda
Mapes; his brothers, Keith Mapes and Glenn Mapes; his wife, Beverly Jane; and
his son, Shan B. Mapes.
Visitation will be at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton on
Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, from 3 to 9 p.m., with family present from 6:30 to 8
p.m. Funeral service will be at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. Friday,
Jan. 3, 2014, with Chaplain Bill Eichelberger officiating. Burial will be at
Greenwood Cemetery in Newton following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to
the Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton.
