Obituary

Lt. Tom Sargent, Ret. Shawnee County Sheriff's Department, passed away Aug. 13, 2016, in Topeka. He was born July 8, 1947, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the son of Roy and Wilma Hutchison Sargent.

Tom served in the U.S. Navy, stationed aboard the U.S.S. Fort Marion LSD-22, during the Vietnam War. He worked for the Hillsboro Police Department and The Geary County Sheriff's Department. Tom worked for the Shawnee County Sheriff's Department from 1971-1996, retiring with 28 years in law enforcement. He attended K-State University and Washburn University.

Tom was a member of AF&M Capitol City Daylight Masonic Lodge, Post 400 American Legion, Capitol Area Metro Case Squad, the Topeka Lodge Fraternal Order of Police and Kansas Peace Officers Association.

Tom is survived by his beloved friend and companion, Phyllis Schaper, of the home; siblings, Mike (Nancy) Sargent, Marla (Robert) Zimmerman; Nephews, Greg and Mark Sargent, Scott (Kati) Zimmerman ; and great-niece and nephew, Sabrina and Michael Zimmerman, all of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his niece, Jayme Zimmerman.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 17, 2016) at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka, with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m.

Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 17, 2016) at Greenwood Cemetery, 1100 E. 1st Street, Newton.
