Dorothy "Verle" Vogt

Obituary

HESSTON - Dorothy "Verle" Vogt, 101, died peacefully on Sept. 20, 2013, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

She was born the first of 11 children on May 6, 1912, to Allen and Katie Beckler Hershberger on a farm near Milford, Neb. She attended Pilot Nob country school in Nebraska through eighth grade, then later came to Kansas to attend Hesston Academy.

On Oct. 12, 1935, she married Willard Vogt, a boy she met in her typing class at Hesston Academy, at a wedding ceremony in her parent's parlor. After their wedding, they took a two week honeymoon to Colorado. A farmer's daughter, Verle brought along half a case of eggs, bacon and enough bread and lunch meat for their meals.

Verle was a Christian homemaker who crafted sewn greeting cards, quilted, and baked hundreds of birthday and wedding cakes from the kitchen in her home. She was active in the Womens Mission and Service Association (now Mennonite Women USA) and for a time served as its conference president.

Verle is survived by son, Gary (Ruth), Hesston. Also surviving are one sister, Edith Roth of Boise, Idaho, and two brothers, Delmar Hershberger of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ivan Hershberger of Vail, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Tim Zook, Kerry Lawandus, Lu Ann Zook, Julie Entz, Brad Vogt, Krista Vogt Troyer, Jane Zook and Kevin Vogt; and 18 great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Josh, Jordan, Aubrie, Angus, Zoe, Emily, Nicholas, Jackson, Lucy, Sophia, Hannah, Kyle, William, James, Willem, Christian and Caroline.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard; and two of their three children, Janet and Richard.

A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kingdom Life Ministries, Hesston. Visitation was 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with family present at the Schowalter Villa Chapel, Hesston. A private family burial is planned in Eastlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Mennonite Women USA and HCJB Global for the ministry of Tim and Renee Zook, in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, 107 S. Lancaster, P.O. Box 32, Hesston, KS 67062.
