Former Newton mayor
Marian Lucille Button, 82, Clay Center, passed away Monday,
July 1, 2013.
Button was born Oct. 15, 1930, in Topeka, Kansas. She
graduated from Topeka High School in 1948 and from Kansas State University in
1951.
She married Donald J. Button on December 28, 1950, in
Topeka, and within a few years began her long and successful career as a
homemaker and mother. They lived in Newton for 23 years, where she was active
in Republican politics, an elected 1976 delegate and 1988 alternate delegate to
the Republican National Convention, a 1984 Presidential Elector, and served as
a Newton City Commissioner and was mayor in 1983. In 1988, she and her husband
moved to Clay Center. Marian was a member of the United Methodist Church. She
served on the Presbyterian Manor Advisory Board, Clay County Arts Council, Clay
County Hospital Foundation, and Republican Women, and was a lifetime member of
the K-State Alumni Association.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Button, Clay Center.;
daughter: Amy Button Renz and husband Allen Renz, Manhattan, KS; two sons:
Daniel and wife Cheryl Button, Jacksonville Beach, FL., and John and wife
Heather Button, Jackson, TN; brother-in-law: Tom Skinner, Clay Center, KS;
sister-in-law: Bette Gallie, Durham, NC; sister-in-law: Marilyn Trotter, New
Field, NY; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday (July 2, 2013) at the Neill- Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center. Family will greet friends at 5 p.m. Funeral services are to be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (July 3, 2013) at the
United Methodist Church in Clay Center, Kansas. Pastors Ryan Lynch and Herb
Mugler will officiate.Memorials to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the
Don and Marian Button Political Science Scholarship at Kansas State University
