Obituary: David C. Thiessen

KS_Newton  —  David C. Thiessen, 89, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Midland Hospice Care in Topeka. He was a long-time resident of the Newton Presbyterian Manor.

He was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Newton to Peter and Kaete (Regier) Thiessen. On May 6, 1949, he married Welma Goering at Eden Mennonite Church in Moundridge, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 2012. They shared 62 years of marriage. Their marriage was blessed with two sons.

David was a member of the former First Mennonite Church in Burns, now the Burns Countryside Church. He retired from his farm south of Peabody.

In 1964, the family tackled the task of building a new home on the farm. They did all of the finish work in the home themselves. David greatly enjoyed spending time with his loving family and many friends.

David is survived by his son, Lyle and his wife, Paula Thiessen of Topeka; daughter-in-law, Mary Thiessen of Peabody; grandchildren, Melissa and her husband, Terry Johnson, Marcy and her husband, Jim Habegger, Nicole Thiessen, Matthew Thiessen and his wife, Kelsey, and Kristen Thiessen; great-grandchildren, Kaete Johnson and Jacob Habegger; brothers, Willard Thiessen of Whitewater and Floyd Thiessen of Texas; and sisters, Esther Stucky and Edna Flora, both of Wichita, Lois Frey of Hesston, and Selma Entz of Whitewater.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one son, Myron Thiessen; brothers, Herbert, Arnold, Walter and Leonard Thiessen; and sister, Wilma Stucky.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Burns Countryside Church in rural Burns, with Chaplain Jerroll Martens presiding. Visitation was 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Burns Mennonite Church Cemetery.

In appreciation by the family for the excellent care David received at the Newton Presbyterian Manor, memorials are suggested to Newton Presbyterian Manor Staff Appreciation Fund, 1200 E. Seventh St., Newton, KS 67114.
