Woodrow Cannon
KS_Newton — Woodrow W. "Woody" Cannon, 94, died
Monday (May 27, 2013) at Asbury Park in Newton, KS. He was born October 27,
1918 in rural Rosalia to Charles A. and Louise (Erickson) Cannon. He married V.
Maxine Cannon on Feb 2, 1941. She preceded him in death on March 2, 2012.
Woody served his country during WWII, entering service in
1941 and serving until 1945. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He
served with General Patton's 3rd army during the liberation of France and other
European countries. He had fought his way to the Elbe River in Germany when the
war ended. Woody was a life member of the VFW Post #971, Newton, and life
member of the American Legion Post #2, Newton. He was also a life member of the
35th Infantry Division Association, Topeka, Kansas where he served as
coordinator for Company I 137th Infantry Regiment. He received a Thank You
Diploma from the French Government for his efforts in liberating France
1944-1945 and a Liberation medal from the people of Normandy, France.
Woodrow was a member of the First United Methodist Church in
Newton and was formerly active in many areas of the church including the
Administrative Board, Church Trustees Chairman, Church Treasurer, endowments,
and did the annual audit for several years. In his retirement he was a member
of the Church Archives/History committee.
He studied Certified Public Accounting, and was accountant
treasurer with Hanna Furniture and Floor Covering in Newton from 1945 to 1987.
In El Dorado he was employed by Walter's Flowers while attending El Dorado High
School. He attended Long School District #171 a one room school in rural
Rosalia for his grade school years.
Woody enjoyed many things, including visiting with neighbors
and friends, working in the yard and garden, drawing and painting, and wood
carving. He also played the violin and guitar. Woodrow also used a short wave
radio for world news and history from its source. He used a computer and the
internet to keep contact with his friends and family through e-mail.
He is survived by his daughter: Janice M. and Tony Decker of
Wichita; son Larry W. and Glenva Cannon of Hutchinson; six grandchildren,
several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son The
Reverend Charles Cannon; two sisters, Lena Brenner and Frances Cannon and one
brother Ole Cannon. He is also preceded in death by one great-grandson Aaron
Decker.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday May 31, 2013 at
Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jay Anderson presiding. Visitation
will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6:30
p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Kechi Township Cemetery, Kechi, Kansas
