Obituary: Bertha A. Nickel
GOESSEL — Bertha A. Nickel, 89, died on December 26 at
Bethesda Home, Goessel. She was born Bertha Anne Ewert on November 24, 1923, in
Hillsboro, to John and Bertha (Wiebe) Ewert. On June 10, 1947, she married
Arnold Nickel. Bertha was a graduate of Bethel College, N. Newton, and received
her M.S. from Kansas State University. She was a Hesston High School teacher
for 22 years. Church was very important to her, and at the time of her death
she was a member of Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Newton. She is survived by
daughter, Harriet and husband, John DeLay of Lincoln, NE; sons, Leo and wife,
Joanne of Ainsworth, NE, Elton and wife, Denise of Goessel, and Donovan and
wife, Jewel, Windsor, CO; a sister, Ruth Harder of N. Newton; sister-in-law,
Sid and husband, Calvin Flickinger, Phoenix, AR; six grandchildren, Pamela
(Brent) Abrahams, Kevin (Yvette) Nickel, Kenton (Eunice) Nickel, Andrea Nickel,
Breanna Nickel and Bethany Nickel; four great-grandchildren, Samuel and Sophia
Abrahams and Corynn and Stephan Nickel; and nieces and nephews. She is preceded
in death by her husband, Arnold Nickel; her parents; and a brother, Daniel. The
committal service will take place at the West Zion Cemetery, Moundridge, at
9:30 a. m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013. Following the committal, family will be
available to greet visitors after 10:15 a. m. at Tabor Mennonite Church, rural
Newton, and the celebration of life service will be at 11 a. m. A light lunch
will follow the service. Memorial donations will be accepted for Mennonite
