Obituary: Maxine Westerman
KS_Newton -- Maxine Westerman, 92, died Jan. 18, 2013, at
the Ellinwood District Hospital. She had been a resident of Ellinwood since
2003, and formerly lived in the Halstead/Burrton area.
She was born on July 13, 1920, to Ray and Selma “Sally”
(Goering) Schowalter in Cooperton, Okla. She graduated from Moundridge High
School in 1938 and married Marvin (“Bus”) Westerman in Moundridge on April 13,
1941. He died on November 11, 2002.
Maxine was a member of the First Mennonite Church of
Halstead and the Halstead Historical Society. She was a charter member of the
former Halstead Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary and had belonged to the Wimodausis
Club and the Halstead Saddle Club.
At points in her life, she worked as a dental assistant, a
farm wife, a retail clerk, and a bookkeeper for the R & S Ranch. From the
'60's to the early ‘80’s, she was co-owner of Westerman’s Country Park, rural
Halstead.
She is survived by her three sons: Mike Westerman of
Ellinwood, Monty Westerman of rural Moundridge, and Marc Westerman (and
companion Zoe Burgess) of Wichita. Other survivors include her granddaughter,
Stephanie (Westerman) Helms and fiancé, Chris Cooley of Larned; and
great-grandchildren, Cassie Williams of Larned and Michael Tiede of Maize, plus
a wealth of relatives and friends.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013,
at Kaufman Funeral Home in Halstead, with the family present from 6:30 to 8
p.m. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the First
Mennonite Church in Halstead, with Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Interment will
follow at 2 p.m. at Mound Township Cemetery, Moundridge.
Memorials are suggested to the church, the Halstead
Historical Society, the Ellinwood Area Health Foundation, or Central Kansas
Cancer Center of Great Bend.
