JAY HANSON
1926 - 2016
Obituary
Jay Hanson was born Dec. 21, 1926, in
Oakland, Nebraska, the son of Mary (Bergquist) and Arden Hanson. He
attended high school in Oakland, Nebraska, and college at the
University of Nebraska. He married Bernice Berry in Newton, on June
12, 1955.
After college, he was employed as a
pharmacist in Imperial and Omaha, Nebraska, as well as Ft Lupton,
Colorodo. From 1963 to 1991, he and Bernice operated Hanson Drug
Store in Lindsborg. Jay made it a point to walk to and from work each
day regardless of weather conditions. He had many interests, but
little time to pursue them. He made time to read and watch Nebraska
Cornhusker football, and loved making people laugh with his unique
sense of humor.
After retiring from the drug store, he
and Bernice traveled in their motor home, visiting many places in the
U.S., such as Washington D.C., New York City, Indiana and Washington.
Winters were enjoyed in south Texas, where Jay assisted with the
reading programs in the middle schools, and was recognized for his 15
years of volunteering. In Texas, they met the family of Tony and
Paula Garces, who became treasured friends to Jay and Bernice.
He is survived by his wife Bernice of
the home; children, William (Barb) of Wichita, Larry of Maize and
Kathleen of Clarkdale, Arizona; grandchildren, Brandon and Tatum;
sister, Ardis Decker of Pueblo, Colorado; nieces Joanie and Julie;
and nephew John.
He was preceded in death by his parents
and a sister, Elaine, of Portland, Oregon.
At his request, Jay's body was
bequeathed to the KU School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m.
on Wednesday (Oct. 19, 2016) at First United Methodist Church, with
the Reverend Dr. Douglas Tofteland presiding.
Memorials are suggested to Good
Shepherd Hospice in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
