Obituary: Betty Jane (Howerton) Kliewer
Betty Jane (Howerton) Kliewer, 94, died Friday, Nov. 23,
2012, at Newton Medical Center. She was born March 24, 1918, in Newton to Earl
and Lura (Pickrell) Howerton. Betty was a 1936 graduate of Newton High School
and attended Bethel College for two years. On April 25, 1941, she married
Arthur Kliewer in Newton, and he preceded her in death on May 20, 2012. Betty
was a lifelong member of the First United Church of Christ (Congregational).
She was a 50 year member of the AG-PEO chapter. She was also a member of the
20th century club and was a charter member of the Jobs daughters of the Masonic
Lodge. Betty enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs.
She also enjoyed spending time playing golf at the Newton Country Club. Friends
and family were very important to Betty, and she greatly looked forward to
spending time with her loving family and many friends. She is survived by her
son and his wife, Bill and Dena Kliewer of Wichita, and several nieces and
nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and one brother,
Earl Howerton Jr. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at
Petersen Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Scribner presiding. Burial
will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service
time on Tuesday at Petersen Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the First
United Church of Christ in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
