Lois M. (Hedge) Scott passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012,
at the Newton Medical Center in Newton at the age of 95.She was born on Dec.
18, 1916, at the home of her parents, Ray and Susie (Lacey) Hedge. She was the
younger sister of Elmer Hedge. Their farm was located 4 miles north and 1 1/2
miles east of Tasco, or 7 miles east of Hoxie. In 1924, the Hedges moved to a
farm just west of Hoxie, so Lois attended Hoxie Grade School, and then
graduated from Sheridan County High School with the class of 1934. She then
went to Fort Hays where she was able to work and graduated with the class of
1938. For her first job, she returned to teach business classes at SCHS. Lois
married Rodney Scott on June 15, 1940, in Colby, and then lived at the Scott
family home in Allison Township, Decatur County, where they raised their three
children, David, Alan and Susan. They lived together on the farm until Rodney
passed away on Jan. 31, 1989. Lois sold the farm in 2001 and moved to Newton,
where she lived on the campus of the Kansas Christian Home. Lois was a member
of the Allison Christian Church, followed by the Hoxie Christian Church, and
then finally the Newton Christian Church. She was a member of the Tuesday Study
Club, Royal Neighbors of America and Eastern Star. In both RNA and OES, she had
numerous leadership positions which allowed her to travel, which she loved
doing. She served as a trustee of the Fort Hays Endowment Association and was a
member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators. She was active in Farm
Bureau with leadership positions that again allowed travel to their national
conventions. Lois served several years on HAWK, the Health Advisory Board for
Western Kansas. She was also active in positions with the Republican Party,
which resulted in her serving for 14 years on the Military Academy Screening
Board. She was able to visit the Naval Academy in Annapolis as a result of this
service. Lois also was very interested in genealogy, so she traveled a lot in
researching ancestors on all sides of both families. Survivors include her
children, David (Ann) Scott of Manhattan, Alan (Anne) Scott of Libertyville,
IL, and Sue Lukens (Raymond Creasy) of Dennard, AR; grandchildren, Allison
Lukens (Daniel Shannon) of Fayetteville, Matt (Brooke) Scott and their
