Obituary: Irvin Koehn
Irvin Koehn, 90, died on Wednesday (Sept. 5, 2012) at Newton
Medical Center. He was born on Oct. 21, 1921, in Cement, Okla., to Sam and Anna
(Schmidt) Koehn. On July 26, 1946, he married Lorene Sebrant in Chickasha,
Okla., and she survives. Irvin was a member of the Grace Mennonite Church in
Halstead. He recently accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and was
baptized on March 10, 2012. Irv worked at local Newton filling stations and as
a wrecker driver for more than 50 years. He enjoyed helping people, working on
cars and spending time in his garden. Irvin’s family was very important to him,
and he looked forward to spending time with his loving family and friends. He
is survived by his wife, Lorene of Newton; daughter, Maxine and her husband,
Clinton Hamm of Newton; son, Lacy and his wife, Anita of Newton; six
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren and was expecting his 12th
great-grandchild soon. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers,
Herman, Menno, Jim and Cecil Koehn; and two sisters, Lula Unruh and Helen Base;
and a daughter, Marjorie Ellen Hamm. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday
(Sept. 10, 2012) at Grace Mennonite Church in rural Halstead, with presiding
ministers Ken Smith, Dean Becker, Raleigh Koehn and Marlin Unruh officiating.
Graveside committal service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Durham Park Cemetery in
rural Durham. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral
Home in Newton. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral
home. Memorials are suggested to Grace Mennonite Church or American Diabetes
Association, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
