Paul W. Nye, former Chief Justice of the Thirteenth Court of Appeals, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, August 17, 2013, following a lengthy illness. Justice Nye was born in Newton, Kansas on March 1, 1921. He received his law degree from University of Kansas Law School in 1950. Justice Nye originally came to Corpus Christi during World War II, serving as a Naval Aviator and Instructor. It is during that time that he met and married Nina Elizabeth Hobrecht, his beautiful wife of 58 years, who predeceased him in 2003. Justice Nye practiced law in Corpus Christi from 1950 until 1963, when he was appointed as one of the original Justices of the Thirteenth Court of Appeals. In 1970, he was elected Chief Justice, a position he served in until his retirement in 1993, a career of 30 years on the bench. 

Justice Nye lived a life full of accomplishments. He served as Chairman of the Nueces County Democratic Executive Committee for four terms, was elected four times to the Executive Committee of the State Bar Judicial Section and later served as its Chairman. Justice Nye was the first Chairman of the Texas Council of Justices of the Court of Appeals. He was the first recipient of the Cecil E. Burney Humanitarian Award and received the prestigious Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Justice Nye served twice as General Chairman of the Little League International Congress. He was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest civic award in scouting. 

Justice Nye was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, a devout Catholic, and a wonderful friend and mentor to all who had the joy and honor to know him. He is survived by six children, Paul W. Nye II, Sally A. Grant (Dick), Michael N. Nye (Naomi), Patrick A. Nye (Julie), Joseph S. Nye, and Thomas F. Nye (Pamela); sixteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. 

A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, and a Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Justice Nye, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Both services will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5620 Gollihar Road.
