Obituary: Margaret W. Smith

Margaret W. Smith, 92, passed away on Thursday (Aug. 16, 2012) at Kidron Bethel Village in Newton. The former Margaret Welch was born in Indianapolis and came to Louisville when she was eight. She was a retired secretary for the KY Baptist Convention, and had worked at Bemis Bag Company and Episcopal Church of the Advent. She was a charter member of Melbourne Heights Baptist Church, where she served as deacon and member of the Golden Friends Senior Club. She also was a Sunday school teacher for junior age girls for many years. She loved cooking for her family and enjoyed music and plays. Margaret is survived by her sons, Herschel O. Smith Jr. of St. Louis, Rodney W. Smith, MD and his wife, Janet Kemink of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Gordon Smith and his wife, Mindy of Newton; and three grandchildren, Kimberly Smith Fetters and her husband, Mark, Jared Smith and his wife, Alicia, and Marissa Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel O. Smith Sr. Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2012) at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Ky., with burial to follow in Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Highlands. Expressions of sympathy may be made to her church, Melbourne Heights Baptist Church, 3728 Taylorsville Road; or donor’s choice of charity.
