Piehler, Lois Janette

The Newton Kansan

Lois Piehler

Lois Janette Piehler was born on May 4, 1930, in Arkansas City to Sumner and Grace Greenwood. She went to be with her Heavenly Father on June 22, 2012.

Lois lived most of her life in Newton, graduating from Newton High School in 1948.

After graduating from Southern Methodist University in 1952, she began a 17-year teaching career, which included positions at Washington and Northridge elementary schools in Newton. She also taught middle school math and reading and was later a school librarian. During this time she also raised two children as a single mother. She enjoyed supporting and watching her children participate in sports and other activities. After retiring from teaching, Lois worked at various restaurants in Newton as a waitress and cleaner until her retirement in 1992.

She loved watching sports on television, especially tennis and basketball. Lois was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton, where she sang in the choir for many years and also participated in various church activities. She enjoyed listening to music and going to the symphony and music theater with friends.

Lois was a loving, caring mother who continually sacrificed for her family and friends. Her dry wit and sarcasm provided many laughs and has been inherited by her children and grandchildren.

Her family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Janet Koehn and Sharon Davis, two very special care-givers who allowed Lois to maintain her independence during the last years of her life. Thank you also to Mary Carmen for being a constant source of support and encouragement to Lois for many years. Lois' presence on this Earth will be greatly missed, but her memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Jo Coats of Arkansas City; her daughter, Rachel and son-in-law, Kerry Edney of Yukon, Okla.; and her son, David Piehler and daughter-in-law, Mindy of Plano, Texas. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Matthew, Megan, Michael and Mitchell Piehler, along with other nieces, nephews and friends.

You are invited to join us in a celebration of her life at 11 a.m. Thursday (July 12, 2012) at First United Methodist Church in Newton.
