Richard D. Smith
Richard D. Smith, 59, died on Wednesday (July 18, 2012) at
his home in Newton. He was born on Oct. 9, 1952, in Shreveport, La., the son of
James Lee and Lucille Weeks Smith. He attended high school in Atlanta, La.,
moving to Anchorage, Alaska, where he graduated from high school. Shortly after
which, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Richard was a fork lift driver for
York Heating and Air Conditioning, which would later become Johnson Control in
Wichita, for 12 years. Richard lived in Wichita for several years before moving
to Newton 26 years ago.
Richard is survived by his wife of 30 years, Virginia Kay
Allmond of the home; son, Colby Allmond of Newton; daughters, Angela Menjivar
of Peabody and Stephanie Smith of Walton; brother, James Larry Smith of
Seminole, Fla.; sister, Martha Jane Crist of West Monroe, La.; two
granddaughters, Genaka and Gesaka Menjivar of Peabody; and a
great-granddaughter, Sophia Spect of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald
Lee Smith.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday (July 23, 2012) at
Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. Interment will be in the Greenwood
Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
