Justina M. Sommerfeld
NEWTON — Justina M. “Josie” Sommerfeld, 91, passed away
Monday (June 18, 2012) at Wheat State Manor in Whitewater.
She was born on March 30, 1921, in rural Harvey County,
Kansas. She was one of three children born of Peter D. and Lena (Dick) Dirks.
On April 2, 1939, she was married to Edwin Sommerfeld. She was a farm wife and
homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, children:
Mike Sommerfeld and Alice Thiessen; and a sister, Sarah Dirks.
She is lovingly survived by her children: Winston and his
wife Janice Sommerfeld of Newton; Gary and his wife Carol Sommerfeld of
Longmont, Colo.; and Melvin and his wife Lynn of Fordland, Mo.; a
daughter-in-law, Margo Sommerfeld of San Diego;
siblings, Ernest Dirks of Hillsboro and Alice Fast of Newton; and many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation with family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at
Lamb Funeral Home in Whitewater. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at
Swiss Church of Whitewater with Pastor Rod Bevan officiating. Interment will be
in the Swiss Cemetery.
Memorial funds are established for Ponca Bible Camp or the
Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in care of Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S.
Main, Whitewater, KS 67154.
