Krehbiel, Rollins K

The Newton Kansan

Rollins K. Krehbiel

NEWTON — Rollins K. Krehbiel, lovingly known as RK, 98, died Sunday (June 17, 2012) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. He was born on Feb. 13, 1914 in Moundridge to Bernard S. and Mary (Voran) Krehbiel. Rollins graduated from Moundridge High School, moved to Newton while working for Boeing as a tool and die maker.

Later moving to Hesston, RK founded The Highway Garage on US 81, which he owned for 16 years. After Rollins sold his business he was employed by Excel Industries. Rollins and Louise (Schmidt) Krehbiel were married on Dec. 21, 1949. They spent 56 years together until Louise’s death in 2005.

Rollins loved working outdoors in his garden, often with his faithful wife Louise.

He was known throughout the Hesston area for his fantastic produce, such as beans, corn, tomatoes and cucumbers. He had an amazing ingenuity in adapting, fixing and making-do…so that a trip to the store could many times be avoided. When writing about his brothers Neal’s death in World War II, he stated, “Sing to the Lord you saints of His, praise His holy name, for His anger last for a moment, but His favor last a lifetime, weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. Hallelujah.”

Rollins is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Dave) Stutzman of Hesston; and two sons, James (Tammy) Krehbiel and Wayne (Glenna) Krehbiel, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Louise, brothers Orlando Krehbiel and Neal Krehbiel and sister Lucile Jackson.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Thursday  at Schowalter Villa’s Chapel in Hesston. Private family burial will take place at the First Mennonite Church of Christian Cemetery in Moundridge.

The family asks in lieu of flowers to please send memorials to the Mennonite Disaster Service in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home 107 S. Lancaster, P.O. Box 32 Hesston, KS 6
