Jon Edward Goering
Obituary
MOUNDRIDGE — Jon Edward Goering was born in Newton, the
first child of Elmer H. and Gladys Goering. He grew up in the First Mennonite
Church of Christian in Moundridge and was baptized into that congregation.
Jon graduated from Moundridge High School in 1965. After a
year of farming, he entered Bethel College in the fall of 1966. In 1969, he
went into 1-W Service, working first at an agricultural station in Garden City
and then in the physical therapy unit of St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. He
returned to Bethel in 1972 and completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology in
1974.
Agriculture and the outdoors were Jon’s lifelong passions.
He worked in a variety of farm and ranch settings: in partnership with his
father on the family farm near Moundridge; on a cattle ranch in southeastern
Kansas; and for many years, on a custom harvest crew, making an annual run from
Texas to the Canadian border. On many occasions, he took his 35 mm camera with
him, sharing his keen eye for natural scenery with appreciative family and
friends.
Jon was a good friend. He remembered birthdays and
anniversaries; he visited; he inquired about the welfare of others. He always
was willing to lend a hand where needed.
He is survived by his mother, Gladys, of Moundridge; and his
brother Wynn and sister-in-law, Ardie of Albuquerque, N.M.
Jon’s father, Elmer, preceded him in death.
Visitation was Sunday (June 3, 2012) at the Moundridge
Funeral Home, with a memorial service on Monday (June 4, 2012) at First
Mennonite Church of Christian in Moundridge. Memorial gifts may be given to
First Mennonite Church of Christian, in care of the funeral home.
