NEWTON — Lois Prater, 81, of Newton died on May 16, 2012, in Olathe.

Lois was born in Newton to William and Laura Manring and was one of two children. She attended Newton schools and was a graduate of Newton High School.

Lois was very active in the community, giving not only her time, but of herself. Some of the many organizations she was involved with and recognized by include: Electa of the Eastern Star for the State of Kansas, 1998 Newton Kansan Woman of the Year, 1999 Regent of the local DAR chapter, Eastern Star Most Worthy Matron, Regent group and past deacon of First Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army board member, Presbyterian Manor board member, Quivira Council of the Boy Scouts Distinguished Service Award, 2004 Presidents Volunteer Service Award, Harvey County Historical Society donor, president of the Newton Friends of the Library, Social Order of the Beauceant, and the Girl Scouts. She also was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church. Lois was employed by Southwestern Bell for 35 years prior to her retirement.

She is survived by her children, Bill and Tina Goodman of Overland Park, Mary Russell and Louis Sangovinkul of Florissant, Colo., Roger Goodman of Cypress, Texas, Nancy Goodman of Lewiston, Idaho, and Mark Goodman of High Point, N.C.; her brother, Fawn of Newton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Gayle Prater; and her parents, William and Laura Manring.

While Lois will be missed, she also will be remembered dearly for years to come by her family and friends for her warmth, love and caring soul.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday (June 1, 2012) at First Presbyterian Church of Newton. The family will have a private committal of ashes.

Memorials have been set up for the following organizations: Caring Hands Humane Society, Permanent Endowment of the First Presbyterian Church, Friends of the Library and Harvey County Historical Museum. Visit www.petersenfamilyfuneralhome.com.
