Ella Schmidt
Obituary
Ella Sophie Schmidt, 84, passed away
Friday (Feb. 3, 2017) at Schowalter Villa, Hesston. She was born Dec.
1, 1932, the sixth child of Jacob B. and Martha Goertzen Schmidt at
their home east of Goessel.
Ella attended the Gordon Grade School
and graduated from Goessel High School in 1951. Ella was a secretary
at Hertzler Clinic, Halstead, for several years. She graduated from
Halstead School of Nursing in 1957. She worked as a registered nurse
for the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Wichita, for more than 30
years. She had been a member of Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church since
June 9, 1946. She also enjoyed reading, traveling and watching KU
basketball.
Ella retired from her nursing career in
1988. She continued to live in Wichita until moving to an independent
living duplex at Schowalter Villa in Hesston in October of 1994.
During retirement, Ella enjoyed more opportunities to travel.
Favorite vacation destinations included Canada, California,
Washington D.C., New York and San Antonio. In recent years, as
symptoms of dementia became more of a challenge, she moved to
assisted living and then full care at Schowalter Villa.
Ella is survived by a sister-in-law,
Frances Schmidt, Newton; nieces, Peggy (Dan) Blevins, Valley Center,
Janice (Verney) Voth, Goessel and Martha (Tom) Unruh Szambecki,
Newton; and nephews, Larry (Tina) Schmidt, Newton and Duane (Karen)
Unruh, Goessel.
Cremation is planned. Graveside
inurnment services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday (Feb. 10, 2017) at
Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church Cemetery, Goessel. Memorial services
will follow at 3 p.m. at Schowalter Villa Chapel, Hesston.
Memorial contributions may be made to
the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church or the Schowalter Villa Good
Samaritan Fund, both in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, Goessel.
