Obituary

NEWTON — Glenn K. Smith, 73, died on Friday (May 18, 2012) at his home in Newton.

Glenn was born on Jan. 17, 1939, to Leo M. and Ruth I. Smith. He was one of three children. His brothers were Gene and Leo Neal.

Glenn was a graduate of Whitewater High School and a longterm resident of Newton. He retired from Westar Energy.

Glenn was an avid hunter, fisherman and NASCAR person. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially of the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals. Martha and Glenn enjoyed gardening and working with the American Legion as a caller and coordinator for bingo. He was a gun enthusiast and a member of the NRA Golden Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Smith; children, Valerie Smith and Kelly Graber of  Maize, and Vanessa and Robert Sassi of Pennsville, N.J.; stepson, Shawn Pedigo of the Dallas/Fort Worth area; and stepdaughter, Martha and David Havilin of Whitewater. His brothers are Gene Smith of Newton and Leo Neal Smith of rural Whitewater. Glenn had five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo M. and Ruth I. (Bland) Smith.

A memorial service was Monday (May 21, 2012) at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Hospice and the Cancer Center of Newton Medical Center, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.

Glenn had been ill with an aggressive form of cancer the last three months. The family is saddened with his sudden loss, but they are appreciative of his life and the man that he was.
