Marcus E. Watts

NEWTON- - Marcus E. Watts, 84, died on Wednesday, (May 9, 2012) at Wesley Hospital in Wichita. Death resulted from brain damage suffered during a heart attack on April 30 in Wichita. He remained comatose and in critical condition until his death on Wednesday evening. Marc was born on June 11, 1927, in Smith Center, the youngest in a family of five children born to Arthur James and Flo May Carter Watts. He married Joyce Unruh Schroeder on Jan. 7, 1978, at the Tabor Mennonite Church of rural Newton.

Some of the activities Marc was involved in during his lifetime were working in building construction, serving in the Army in Korea during the 1940s, owning a glass company in Newton, selling Wa-Kon-Da recreational vehicles, going to baking school in Oklahoma and baking wedding cakes, working with the North Newton Police department, and being a service technician on commercial and residential buildings.

Marc is survived by his wife Joyce of 34 years; from his previous marriage, three daughters, Sandy and husband Bob Carnahan of Green Valley, Ariz., Connie Watts of Phoenix, and Dee and husband Rick Piepho of Newton; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Other survivors are four step-children: DeVona Powell of Westminster, Colo., Marcus and wife Karis Schroeder of Wichita, Rusten Schroeder and wife Susan Merrifield of rural Newton, and Brent and wife Tonda Schroeder of Belgrade, Mont.; six step-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Willis W. Walker of Yakima, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Leao Conrad and Alice Marie Walker; and two brothers in infancy.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been donated to The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City for medical teaching and research.

A Celebration of Life is planned for 7 p.m. Monday in the Tabor Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall, 891 Chisholm Trail in Newton.
